I love how this book opens: "Imagine handing a letter to your boss that reads, 'Dear Boss, I'm writing to let you know that your services are no longer required. Thanks for everything, but I'll be doing things my own way now.". Oh, how I wish that's exactly what I'd said to my last boss! (Can I send a thank-you-for-letting-me-go letter in retrospect?!).
Say bye-bye, boss!
My own foray into entrepreneurship was unexpected and sudden. When I first struck out on my own, it was about survival - a-hustling and a-moving and a-shaking to put food on the table and pay the bills - and that's a story I share with many of the accidental entrepreneurs author and entrepreneur Chris Guillebeau profiles in his book, The $100 Startup. These case studies represent real people - just like you and me - who've created something out of nothing and are living the lives they really want; travelling the world, working where and when they want to, on their terms. Their stories show that it's possible for ordinary folk to unhitch from the corporate machine and make a go of it - without vast sums of venture capital or debt (although if you want to build your business that way, says Chris, that's okay, too!).
While there are other business books out there which provide would-be entrepreneurs with more practical, actionable information about how to start a business, The $100 Startup is nevertheless a pleasant, easy-going read with a simple message - we did it, and so can you! Apart from imparting inspiration to get off your ass, get going and get into business for yourself, it's the kind of book that sparks off ideas as you read - I jotted down these ideas in a notebook and shall be implementing them (adapted for the particular needs and aims of my own business) in the coming weeks.
