We've heard a lot of talk about content marketing being the new SEO, but should the two really be pitted head-to-head? We don't think so; in fact, we believe that SEO and content marketing, whilst being distinct fields, are perfectly complementary. Here's a quick breakdown of some of the similarities and differences between SEO and content marketing:
  • Content marketing is about creating and sharing quality content with an audience to drive engagement, inform them about a brand, products or services and, ultimately, influence buying decisions. Read more about what content marketing is...
  • SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of working on features of a website, including but not limited to web content, to make it more easily discoverable by the search engines. Read the Two-Minute Guide to SEO...
  • Content marketing can make use of both online and offline channels, for example, blog posts or custom print magazines
  • A core focus of SEO is the creation of high-quality content (which has been created with both human audiences and search engines in mind)
  • A content creator working in the content marketing arena may or may not also have training and experience in creating content which has been search engine optimised.
It's clear that SEO and content marketing intersect - for best results, your content marketing efforts should be optimised for search and social, and your SEO content should be part of a greater content marketing strategy.
