So you thought that the Google geeks were all mathematical algorithms and no sense of humour? Actually, they're a regular barrel of laughs - hiding little jokes and gimmicks and tricks in the code they write for us to discover. These unexpected, hidden features are known as 'Easter eggs' - so-called because uncovering them is a bit like the finding the chocolate treats on the Easter egg hunts we loved as kids.

Google loves to hide Easter eggs for us to find!
In anticipation of the forthcoming Easter weekend, I thought I'd share my favourite Google Easter eggs - if you haven't sampled them yet (or even if you have), they're a fun way to while away the time while you count down to some deserved time off...Enjoy!
  1. Barrel Roll: Type 'Do a Barrel Roll' into the search bar and watch what happens next!
  2. The Meaning of Life: Do a search for 'the answer to life, the universe and everything else'...Google's response takes its inspiration from Douglas Adams' classic 1979 science fiction novel, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. In the book, Adams posited the answer to the meaning of life - read the backstory to his answer here...
  3. Telepathic Search: Enter 'Mentaplex' into the Google search bar, click on the presented link and follow the instructions...
  4. Six Degrees of Bacon: Type in the phrase 'Bacon number' plus the name of a celebrity to find out what their particular 'Bacon Number' is - This is inspired by the cult game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, which suggests that every actor is linked to Hollywood star Kevin Bacon by six degrees of separation. Even our very own Jacob Zuma has a Bacon Number and it turns out he's quite connected...!
  5. Retro Google - To remind us just how far Google search has come, search for 'Google in 1998' and be transported back in time...
